What kind of Raclette unit should I get?
We offer traditional raclette melter where the cheese is brought close to a heating source until it starts melting and than scraped off. The cheese is served with boiled potatoes and some side dishes. (see recipe) While this is a very traditional way of enjoying raclette, a lot of people now go for a raclette grill that has dishes that can be put under the heating element to melt cheese slices and a grill top to cook meat and vegetables to go with the cheese. This unit allows to be more creative when it comes to raclette dinner.
What Raclette Grill is right for me?
The first question you have to answer is how many people you’d like to entertain and how much room do you have to store the raclette grill. Our smallest units are the candle light raclettes from Swissmar. It’s a cute unit that is great for a romantic dinner for 2 and small enough to fit into every kitchen cupboard. The larger raclette grills can comfortably accommodate 8 people. The 8-person raclette grills from Swissmar are all the same regarding functionality as they all easily accommodate gatherings of friends and family. The difference is in the color and material of the base unit and the different grill tops (see below).
What grill top should I choose?
The raclette grills are available in 3 different tops and are available as replacement parts.
- The non-stick grill top is easy to clean and heats up fast. To avoid damage to the coating one has to be very careful not to use any metal utensils on the grill top. We recommend using a nylon turner or tongs to handle the grilled goods.
- The hot stone is a popular choice for its functionality and elegant appearance. This natural granite stone is very robust. Cleaning is easy with a simple scrub in warm soapy water. The stone needs some preheating time either on the grill (30 minutes prior to start) or in the oven (30 minutes at 350F).
- The cast iron grill top is a wonderful new addition to the raclette dining experience. The many benefits include a short pre-heating time, a durable coating, and easy cleaning with a simple water only scrub. The cast iron grill top works essentially like cast iron cookware, meaning it will need to be seasoned before its first use.
Is the non-stick coating on the grill top and the dishes safe?
Swissmar uses a water-based fluorocarbon non-stick coating on the raclette dishes and cast aluminum non-stick grill plates. The coating is PFOA free and has passed FDA 21 CFR 175.300 testing performed by SGS, the world's leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company. Its use on today’s cookware is completely safe for normal home cooking, including use of our raclette grills and dish pans.
What accessories do I need?
Every raclette comes with the basic necessary accessories. The accessories offered are a wonderful addition to any raclette dining experience, or as a thoughtful gift for friends and family with their own raclette grill. If you choose a non-stick grill top we recommend raclette tongs to avoid accidental damage by use of forks when handling the grilled goods. Our stainless steel turner provides an elegant solution for turning the grilled goods and scraping for clean up. A nice touch is the insulated potato bag that keeps the boiled potatoes warm and brings Swiss flair to the dinner table with its Edelweiss design.
Can I have my order gift wrapped?
During the checkout process you can select gift wrapping for your items. Than use the 'comment box' to add a text to your card. If you let us know what the occasion is we'll make sure to use a matching card and wrapping paper. Sorry, we can’t gift wrap food items.
When will my order ship?
All in-stock items will ship the next business day after we receive your order. You will be notified when your order has shipped and where you can track your order. In the unusual event that an item is on back-order we will notify you as soon as we get your order. Perishable items are being shipped at the beginning of the week to avoid extended shipping time over the weekend.
Where is the cheese produced?
We offer a variety of French and other Swiss raclette cheeses that vary over the season. They are made in the country indicated in the product description of the cheese. Mainly Switzerland and France.
Tell me about the cheese
Raclette cheese is a washed rind cheese that can vary in taste (just like a cheddar taste different depending who the cheese maker is). A big influence on the taste comes from the milk that was used to produce the cheese. Alpage raclette cheeses like the seasonal Maran and Risler are made with milk from grass fed cows while the Emmi and Mifroma cheeses are made with milk from more industrialized diary farms. The same is true for the French raclette cheeses.
The French raclettes are usually a little stronger in taste while the alpage raclette cheeses are a great cheese just to eat cold as well.
When will the cheese ship?
If you choose ground shipping, the cheese will ship on Monday through Wednesday following your order. The cheese is shipped on ice. Most destinations can be reached within 3 days. Please don't expect that the ice packs are still frozen. We ship with ice and foil to keep the cheese at a cooler temperature. Raclette cheese is a semi hard cheese and does not have to kept cold at all time. In the summer month you might receive a package with relative warm and soft cheese. Just place in the refrigerator and it will be just fine. Our preferred shipping method is US priority mail. It's usually faster than FedEx or UPS and helps us keep our cost down. Please understand that we can not be liable if the shipper does not deliver in the promised time. The only way to have guaranteed delivery is to chose 2nd day air during check out as shipping method. However we are trying to keep the cheese as cold as possible, therefore we can’t ship over a weekend since that would prolong the delivery time. If you need the cheese faster, you can choose 3rd, 2nd day or overnight shipping during checkout. If you order today before 4.00 pm, your expedited shipment will go out the next day. IF time allows a delivery before the weekend. If in doubt, please don’t hesitate to call or email us. To avoid expedited shipping charges we ship the cheese on ice. We will charge you a fee of $4.00 to cover the cost of ice and foil.
In general raclette cheese is very stable and is fine if it isn't refrigerated all the time. If it gets too warm it will deform but is still okay to consume.
Please understand that we can not be held liable for packages that are lost or stolen. We ship with tracking information and communicate that with our customers. Unfortunately, in rare occasions a shipment is marked delivered but the customer didn't receive it. In that case please make a claim with the shipping company. The package is shipped insured. How much cheese do I need?
For a traditional raclette dinner, we recommend 1/3 to 1/2 lb. of raclette cheese per person. We offer cheese blocks for easy cutting to use with a raclette grill and 1/4 and 1/2 cheese wheel to be used with our raclette melter.
Where is the meat produced?
The dried meats and sausages are made in small batches by a butcher in the US, using traditional Old World recipes.
